Frequently Asked Questions

Is ASR a course?

No. ASR is not a course platform or art school. It is an ongoing studio environment where people can practice painting, explore meaningful questions, and develop their work over time. There are no modules to complete and no timeline to keep up with. The Studio is built around a living monthly rhythm instead.

Is this for beginners?

Yes. ASR includes people who are just beginning, people returning to painting after time away, and people who have painted for a long time. What matters most is not your level. What matters is that painting matters to you and that you want a more serious, more supported place to grow.

What if I paint on and off?

That is exactly who ASR is built for. Many people paint in bursts, then lose momentum, then try to begin again. The Studio is designed to give painting a steadier rhythm, with support, guidance, and a structure that helps you return without pressure or intimidation. Both steady painters and on-and-off painters belong here.

What if I do not fully call myself an artist?

That is completely fine. You do not need to prove you are an artist before you belong here. If painting matters to you, that is enough to begin. ASR is for people who love painting and want it to have a more real place in their life, even if they do not fully call themselves artists.

What happens inside a Studio Session?

A Studio Session is the monthly anchor inside ASR. It is a live immersive session built around one important painting question, explored through conversation, demonstration, and focused practice. It begins the month’s exploration and gives direction to what unfolds in the Residency afterward.

What is the difference between the Residency and the Mail Club?

The Residency is the ongoing online studio. It includes Monthly Studio Sessions, Weekly Practice Rooms, the evolving Reference Room, and the Studio Café community. The Mail Club is a separate monthly studio exploration delivered to your door, built around the same Studio Question explored inside the monthly Studio Session. It is designed to help you experiment, observe, and deepen your painting practice through physical studio materials and a private companion video.

It includes a beautiful print of a news painting I create monthly which you can display and paint your own version plus a video of how it was painted along with the colour card and inspiration.

What do I receive in the Studio Companion?

The Studio Companion is a downloadable guide built around one of the questions shaping the Studio. It includes prompts, small studies, and reflections you can explore in your own practice. It is meant to be a thoughtful first step into the month’s question, not a course.

Can I join after attending a Studio Session?

Yes. If you are new to the Studio, attending a Studio Session is one way to begin. These sessions are occasionally opened to the public so people can experience the Studio environment before joining the Residency. After the session, participants receive a private invitation to join. You can join get on the wait list.
